Ghana through the Lens 1950s-1970s

Background Imagery - Accra, Railway Station Late 1950s - A rare view of the railway station, without the frantic crowd.

The Willis Bell Photographic Archive contains more than 39,000 photographic negatives and original prints dating from c.1957-1978 made by Bell, an American photographer, during the two decades following Ghana's national independence. Capturing the full scope and variety of the photographer's work and his working process, the archive includes Bell's entire original print collection (c. 4,000+) and all viable photographic negatives (c. 35,000). Due to their scope and diversity—portraiture, landscapes, documentary images of political and cultural events, everyday life, and architectural projects; advertising, fine art, and illustrative photography—these images are valuable for international scholarship and education, as well as general audiences.
